This case highlights the need for individualized care. This patient had a distal radius fracture just affecting the volar lunate facet. This facet is a part of the radius bone that is crucial for wrist stability. If it is not stabilized appropriately, rapid arthritic progression can result.
Rather than a standard volar locking plate which may not have appropriately secured this fragment, and would involve far more metal placement than necessary, a more streamlined and elegant solution was selected in this case.
This purpose-built plate is made exactly for this indication. It fit perfectly on the bone and stabilized the fragment admirably. The patient recovered well, and appreciated having a smaller, lower-profile implant.
